Why your website isn’t ranking on Google (and exactly how to fix it).

If your website isn’t showing up on Google, you’re invisible. And for a local service business, invisible means losing customers to your competitors every single day. Six specific mistakes explain almost all of it.

Map Pack is the box of three businesses Google shows on a map, above the ordinary blue links. It is where most people pick who to call.

If your website isn’t showing up on Google, you’re invisible. And for a local service business, invisible means losing customers to your competitors every single day — even if your work is better, your prices are fair, and your customers love you.

The frustrating part? Most of the time it’s not a mystery. There are six specific mistakes that explain why the vast majority of small business websites don’t rank. And once you know what they are, you can fix them.

Why rankings actually matter for your business

Let’s be clear about what we’re talking about. When someone in your area searches “HVAC repair near me” or “best plumber in Hammond” — the businesses that show up on page one get the call. The ones on page two and beyond might as well not exist.

93% of online experiences begin with a search engine. If you’re not on page one, you’re essentially not in the game.

Google processes over 8.5 billion searches per day. A significant portion of those are people looking to hire someone like you. The question is whether they find you — or your competitor.

Mistake #1: your site was built on a template

This one might sting a little, but it needs to be said: template websites are a ranking disadvantage from day one.

When you use a site builder or a generic template, you’re sharing code, structure, and often entire design patterns with thousands of other websites. Google’s algorithms can recognize this. More importantly, template sites tend to:

  • Load slowly because of bloated code the template builder packs in
  • Have poor Core Web Vitals scores that tank your technical SEO
  • Look identical to dozens of competitors, destroying your brand differentiation
  • Limit your ability to optimize page structure for specific keywords

A custom-built website, designed around your specific goals and audience, doesn’t have any of those problems. It also signals to Google — and your customers — that you’re a legitimate, professional business.

The Cre8 standard

We never use templates. Every site we build starts with a blank canvas. It takes more work — and it’s worth every minute of it.

Mistake #2: you have zero technical SEO

Technical SEO is the foundation that everything else sits on. It’s the behind-the-scenes stuff that tells Google how to read, index, and rank your site. And most small business websites get it completely wrong.

Here’s what proper technical SEO actually looks like:

  1. Optimized page titles and meta descriptions for every single page
  2. Proper heading structure (H1, H2, H3) that tells Google what each page is about
  3. Schema markup — structured data that helps search engines understand your business type, location, hours, and reviews
  4. An XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
  5. Fast load speeds — Google’s Core Web Vitals are now a ranking factor
  6. Mobile-first design, because most of your customers are searching on their phones

If your site is missing these, you’re essentially sending Google a document written in a language it can only partially understand. It’ll try its best — but it won’t rank you as high as a site that’s properly optimized.

Mistake #3: your Google Business Profile is invisible

For local businesses, the Google Business Profile is just as important as your website — and most business owners either haven’t claimed it, haven’t optimized it, or set it up once and forgot about it.

An optimized profile gets you into the Map Pack — the three local businesses that show up above the organic search results with the map. That’s premium real estate, and it’s completely free. But you have to earn it.

The Map Pack gets 44% of clicks. If you’re not in it, you’re leaving almost half your potential leads on the table.

Regular profile posts, review management, updated photos, accurate business information, and keyword-optimized descriptions are all part of the equation. None of this happens automatically. It requires consistent attention.

Mistake #4: you have no content strategy

Google rewards websites that consistently publish valuable, relevant content. A static, never-updated website is a signal to Google that your business may not be active — or authoritative.

A proper content strategy for a local service business looks like:

  • Service pages that target specific keywords your customers are searching for
  • Location pages that establish your presence in specific markets
  • Blog posts (like this one) that answer the questions your customers are already asking
  • FAQ content that captures featured snippet opportunities

Every piece of content is an opportunity to rank for another keyword. Every keyword you rank for is another chance for a customer to find you instead of your competitor.

Mistake #5: you’re not building authority

Google’s ranking algorithm uses something called domain authority — a score based largely on how many other credible websites link back to yours. These are called backlinks, and they’re one of the most powerful ranking signals that exist.

Building authority takes time and deliberate effort:

  • Getting listed in high-quality local directories (beyond just Google and Yelp)
  • Earning coverage from local news outlets or industry publications
  • Guest posting on relevant, authoritative sites
  • Building partnerships with complementary businesses

This is a long-term play — but it’s what separates businesses that rank for competitive keywords from those stuck on page three.

Mistake #6: you set it and forgot it

Here’s the most common mistake of all: treating your website and SEO like a one-time project instead of an ongoing investment. Google’s algorithm updates constantly. Your competitors are improving their sites constantly. Your market is changing.

A website that was well-optimized two years ago may not be well-optimized today. Rankings require maintenance. That’s why the best approach isn’t a one-time build — it’s a monthly commitment to monitoring, adjusting, and improving.

The fix: what actually works

If any (or all) of the above sounds familiar, here’s the honest truth: fixing it is not a one-afternoon project. It requires expertise, tools, and consistent effort over time. But it’s absolutely doable — and the results are real.
